Hi! I’m Miranda Dunlap.

I’m a journalist based in Houston, Texas.

I currently work at the Houston Landing, a non-profit digital news organization devoted to public service journalism that strengthens democracy and improves the lives of Houstonians.

Here, I cover Houston’s community colleges. I report in partnership with Open Campus, a non-profit dedicated to strengthening higher education reporting across the county.

Despite roughly half of Houston’s higher-education students attending community colleges, I’m the only reporter dedicated to these institutions. My reporting holds institutions accountable, highlights barriers faced by students and helps them navigate their opportunities.

Previously, I covered K-12 education across the Houston region, covering school funding and budget cuts, LGBTQ+ student issues, the state takeover of Houston ISD and the lack of school board representation in low-income communities.

My work has created a real-world impact — including spurring a federal investigation, prompting civic engagement and revealing the effects of high-level policies on real students.

I’m a native Michigander, and I studied political science pre-law and journalism at Michigan State University. Previously, I worked at Automotive News, covering all things automotive industry, and I served in various capacities at The State News.

When I’m not writing, you can find me attempting to exceed my GoodReads goal and spoiling my cat, August.
